Gloria Volz is an organizing guru par excellence! At the end of 2010, I decided the time had come to really address the clutter and dumping station for papers that had become my office. It had become overwhelming, and was not only taking much needed space in my house, but unwanted space in my head. I called Gloria to the rescue. Her first step was to develop an action plan on how I could tackle the mess. Next she offered to spend a 3-hour session with me to start the process of dealing with all my papers. I was horrified. What if she wanted me to throw away papers that I longed to keep? What if she saw some piece of paper that I considered confidential? And, I felt embarrassed to acknowledge that I might not be able to start my action plan on my own. I immediately rejected her offer because I knew that I could do all this on my own. We set a meeting for the next week to see how I was getting along.
Guess what? I hadn’t moved forward. Nothing had changed. I realized that it was difficult for me to get started without additional help. The next time Gloria offered to give me a 3-hour session I accepted. Here is what happened: we went through each piece of paper, and I decided what to do with each piece. Gloria never influenced me to keep it or throw it away. She has a real sense of privacy, and never asked what the paper was, and never seemed “nosy”. She respected my boundaries at the same time nudging me to move forward.
Because of Gloria’s sensitivity to my resistance, she kept me on track in the most gentle and consistent way. We kept moving forward through several 3-hour sessions. She has a system that is infallible. The result is that I have a clutter free, efficient, systematically organized office….one that I now love to use, and one that I feel motivated to keep clutter free and organized. I am so grateful to Gloria for her gentle persistence, her thoughtful process, and her willingness to let me take whatever time I needed to achieve quite wonderful results.
